Irritable Bowel Information and Support Association (IBS) is a self help organisation for people suffering IBS. Membership is open to anyone (joining fee $10, annual membership sub-scription $20, $17 if on a pension). A diagnosis by a medical practitioner is recommended. IBS affects the nerves and muscles of the bowel, and is classified as a functional gastrointestinal disorder. Nerves become over sensitive and muscles may not work in unison, causing abdominal pain and irregular bowel movements.
The Leukaemia Foundation provides support for patients with leukaemia and other related blood disorders. A telephone information and counselling service is available Mon-Fri 9-5pm. Practical assistance is available on an individual needs basis and is assessed by working in consultation with your doctor and health professionals. Transport services are available with several courtesy vehicles operating throughout NSW to take patients to and from hospitals. Free temporary accommodation is available for those travelling to treatment close to major treatment centres in NSW and ACT. Other forms of accommodation assistance can be organised for families who have to relocate from rural and regional areas.
